A child abducted from her mother while out walking in Wildwood was
rescued Thursday night in Orange City, a Wildwood police official said.
The combined efforts of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement,
Orange City police and Volusia deputies helped solve the case rather
quickly, said Wildwood police Capt. Paul Valentino. Karmen Barfield, 6,
was walking with her mother at 2 p.m. when her father, Chance Barfield,
tried to run over her mother with his truck, Valentino said.
Chance Barfield got out of his truck, argued with his ex-girlfriend
and grabbed the child and put her in his truck, Valentino said. The
mother called 9-1-1, and an amber alert was issued, Valentino said.
The child was found at a home at 226 Edwards Ave., shortly before 6
p.m., Volusia County sheriff's spokesman Gary Davidson said.
Volusia deputies and Orange City police were on the alert for the
child after Wildwood authorities said the father, Chance Barfield, had
family in Orange City. Chance's empty pickup was spotted by authorities
on Graves Avenue and a follow-up investigation led authorities to the
Orange City home where Karmen Barfield and Chance Barfield were found
hiding in the attic, Davidson said.
Chance Barfield was arrested and held for Wildwood police.

Officers from all over the state were searching for a little girl from
Wildwood, but Friday she's safe at home with her mother just one day
after police say her father snatched her.A judge told the 6-year-old girl's father he will not be allowed to bond out of jail Friday afternoon.
Police said Chance Barfield attacked his ex-girlfriend in Sumter County
Thursday afternoon, then grabbed his daughter and drove her to Volusia
County. So far, Barfield has not been charged with kidnapping.
Wildwood police have a laundry list of warrants
for Barfield, from domestic battery to child abuse.Investigators say he's being held at the jail on a no bond status.Friday
afternoon, while Chance Barfield was making a first appearance for
violating his probation on charges of grand theft and burglary, Wildwood
police and DCF were checking up on his ex and their 6-year-old
daughter, Karmen. “She took her and moved to another county,” Barfield claims.Barfield
is accused of taking his daughter after a confrontation with her mother
in Wildwood. Investigators said Barfield had his daughter for nearly
eight hours before his truck was spotted in Orange City.Barfield
and his daughter were holed up in a hot attic of a home on Graves Avenue
until deputies ordered him out. Karmen was reunited with her mother,
Krystle Pettigrew.Pettigrew said she's grateful things worked out as they did. “I'm feeling very happy and relieved that my daughter's home and safe,” she said.Pettigrew remarked that she and Barfield had a tumultuous relationship. But on
Thursday, she said even as she feared for her own safety, she never
worried about Barfield harming their child. “I think that he just missed his daughter and went about it the wrong way,” Pettigrew said. The
wrong way may cost Barfield dearly. In addition to violating his
three-year probation, Wildwood police are charging Barfield with a
laundry list of charges including, interfering with child custody. Those
charges will be added to the more than a dozen arrests Barfield has
already had since 2005, ranging from simple assault to robbery with a
firearm. But, even after this latest incident, Pettigrew harbors no ill
will for her ex.“It doesn't matter how I think of him he's still her father,” she said.In
addition to interfering with custody, Barfield is being charged with
aggravated battery, trespassing, and contributing to the delinquency of a
minor.
