Skelton case: Skelton continues to talk and change his story
Posted on July 18, 2011 by Valhall

Excerpt:

John Skelton continues to grant interviews as he sits in a Lenawee county jail cell awaiting trial for his multiple charges surrounding the disappearance of his three small sons, Andrew, Alexander and Tanner. As you will recall at least twice since being arrested last year he has called news stations and given phone interviews. This time he agreed to a series of interviews with the Detroit Free Press at the jail.

John continues to stick with the story that he handed his three sons off to two people (who he claims to know only their first names, Sue and Elijah) who he claims are members of the United Foster Outreach, some type of subgroup of a larger organization John refers to as Underground Sanctuaries. John has contended he was first made aware of the group by a woman he originally referred to as Joann Taylor. Morenci police have stated Joann Taylor does not exist. So John changed her named…to Judy.

John Skelton makes plea deal in Morenci disappearance of 3 young sons
Gina Damron Detroit Free Press
July 28, 2011

ADRIAN -- The Morenci man accused in the disappearance of his three sons pleaded no contest today to three counts of unlawful imprisonment in Lenawee County Circuit Court.

John Skelton is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 15.

He could receive 15 years, which would be served concurrently, on the charges, his attorney John Glaser said today.

As part of the plea deal, Glaser said kidnapping and parental kidnapping charges have been dropped. If he had been convicted of kidnapping, Skelton could have faced up to life in prison.

Asked why the deal was made, Lenawee County Prosecutor Jonathan Poer said officials plan to release a statement this afternoon.

"We had full conversations with the law enforcement and the family," Poer said.

Skelton's sons -- Andrew, Alexander and Tanner, ages 9, 7 and 5, respectively -- have been missing since late November. Police have said they are treating the case like a homicide investigation, which is still ongoing.

During the hearing, Circuit Judge Margaret M.S. Noe read aloud from police reports generated by the FBI and Michigan State Police.

Some of the details Noe read were familiar stories Skelton has told to the media, including the Free Press, which did a series of interviews with him at the Lenawee County Jail earlier this summer. He has maintained that he gave his sons to members of an underground sanctuary group and doesn't know where they are. Skelton has said his children wouldn't be returned as long as he is in jail and as long as his ex-wife, Tanya Zuvers, had custody.

But new details emerged.

Noe said Skelton told investigators at one point that he wrapped each son in a blanket, gave each a stuffed animal, placed them in his van and drove them away.

She said Skelton reportedly took his sons' winter coats and toothbrushes to his aunt's home and told her he didn't need them anymore. As well, Noe said Internet records show Skelton searched for information on how to break a neck about one week before the children went missing.

Noe said Skelton reportedly told investigators: "The children will hibernate until they graduate."

This is a raw deal for the boys, that's for sure. This asshat should be given nothing but bread and water and no plea deals until he provides the info on where they are.
I will leave this storyline here as the homicide investigation is still proceeding.
Stay tuned...

ADRIAN, Mich. —

A judge exceeded sentencing guidelines Thursday to impose a minimum
10-year prison term on the father of three missing Morenci boys, then
added he should serve the entire 15-year maximum for his unlawful
imprisonment convictions.

Guidelines called for no more than a seven- to 15-year prison term.

John Russell Skelton, 39, said he blamed others for making him feel he
needed to give his sons to an organization to protect them from abuse.

“I would have done things differently if I didn’t think the system
failed me,” Skelton told Lenawee County Circuit Judge Margaret M.S. Noe.

Skelton pleaded no contest July 28 to unlawfully imprisoning his sons
Andrew, 9, Alexander, 7, and Tanner, 5. Noe used police reports of the
Thanksgiving disappearance and subsequent search for the boys.

“His stories are inconsistent and far fetched,” said his ex-wife, Tanya Zuvers, in her statement to the court.

She asked for the maximum sentence for her ex-husband.

Prosecutors and a probation officer who conducted a presentence
investigation for the court also recommended exceeding state guidelines
to impose a maximum sentence.

“It’s difficult to imagine a more compelling case of unlawful
imprisonment in the history of the state of Michigan,” said assistant
Lenawee County Prosecutor Douglas Hartung.

Claims the boys were at risk of abuse by their mother were never
brought up during divorce proceedings that began a year ago, Hartung
said, and Skelton never made a complaint to local or Michigan State
Police.

“Does he have the courage to finally tell the truth, or will he continue his cowardly ways?” Hartung asked.

“You’re nothing but a coward, “ he later said directly to Skelton.

Noe said state sentencing guidelines are inadequate for the enormity of
the crime committed by Skelton against his sons, his ex-wife and the
community.

“I don’t think the extent of the pain could have been anticipated by the drafters of the guidelines,” Noe said.

The psychological injuries continue due to the uncertainty over what has happened to the boys, she said.

“We don’t know if they have or are continuing to be hurt,” Noe said.
“It is outrageous and it must be considered and has been considered by
me in determining sentencing.”

Noe said Skelton has deprived the family and the community of the
comfort of knowing where the boys are. Skelton interrupted the judge to
say: “Including myself, your Honor.”

The judge said she has given Skelton numerous opportunities to come
clean about the boys’ whereabouts, and he has repeatedly failed to do
so.

“Your explanations have been ridiculous,” she said.

Outside the courtroom, Morenci Police Chief Larry Weeks said he remains
convinced Skelton murdered his sons rather than giving them to an
organization as he claims.

“My heart wants to believe what he says. It’s unfortunate he uses that
as a mechanism,” Weeks said. “It’s my belief John Skelton murdered these
boys.”
The sentencing does not affect the continuing investigation that Weeks said still consumes a majority of his time.

“As I told the family, it's a marathon, not a sprint,” Weeks said.
“We’re not going to give up. We’re continuing to investigate.”

Morenci, Mich. - John Skelton has been sentenced, but there’s still
no sign of the missing children. Skelton is standing firm on his claim
that he placed his three sons with members of an underground
organization, a family with adopted children of their own. Police say,
however, there’s no evidence they exist. But an area psychologist has been monitoring the case from the beginning and believes Skelton may be telling the truth.
Forensic psychologist Dr. Steven Miller has, for more than 30 years, been
evaluating victims and suspects for the criminal justice system and
family courts. And after listening to what Skelton has said about his
sons, Miller believes he gave them up to a secret organization.
"I don’t see any evidence from my reading of his interview that he’s lying
about giving them to somebody," Miller told Action News back in
December, about a week after Alexander, Andrew and Tanner disappeared.
"Now, I see plenty of evidence that suggests that he’s misdirecting people
and he’s not telling everything that he knows," he said.
John Skelton was under arrest for kidnapping, and there was a growing fear
that the children had been murdered. Hours of searching in the dead of
winter in Ohio and Michigan, and again in July during a police training
session all turned up nothing.
Skelton had spoken by phone with
Action News reporter Tom Wait, and just two weeks ago, Skelton spent
more than an hour on the phone with me, again insisting that he placed
the children with a family in the underground.
“I’ve met these people, if I had to put a number on how many times I’ve met them I would
say 25…it wasn’t a onetime meeting," Skelton said.
"It wasn’t like that. the boys saw them a few times as well,” he said.
Dr. Miller says Skelton isn't off-base.
"The underground actually exits, I know it exists, it’s been around for 25 years," Miller said.
After hearing Skelton’s interviews, and talking to family members on both
sides, Dr. Miller even more strongly believes Skelton gave the children away.
“It’s likely that he had a plan to go underground himself
originally with the children, which is usually the case when a child
goes under ground with a parent, a protective parent," said Miller.
Skelton alleges his now ex-wife Tanya had been inappropriate with the boys, and
that long before the children disappeared, John had told his parents in
Jacksonville, Florida about his concerns. Dr. Miller has interviewed John’s mother and father.
"Both of them said that he was talking about this sexual misconduct on the part of his wife as early as
February, or March, that would have given him some time to think about
this, and once I think he lost custody, I think that he went in to full
speed ahead with trying to do something to get the boys into a safe
place," said Miller.
We wanted to speak with Tanya about the misconduct allegations, but after agreeing to talk about this and other
issues, Tanya canceled the meeting.
“You have to keep an open mind, because there’s always two sides to the story," said Dr. Miller.
"You want to have an opportunity to interview everyone."
It’s important to note that police investigators may have information and
insight about the disappearance that Dr. Miller doesn’t have. They stand
firm that this should remain a homicide investigation, until they have
evidence to prove the children are alive.

A prayer vigil is planned for three young Michigan brothers missing since Thanksgiving.
The
Daily Telegram of Adrian reports the vigil is 2 p.m. Sunday in
Morenci's Wakefield Park. It will include the dedication of a tree
donated in honor of Andrew, Alexander and Tanner Skelton.

The boys were 9, 7 and 5 at the time of their disappearance from
their father's home in Morenci, about 70 miles southwest of Detroit near
the Ohio state line. The boys' father, John Skelton was sentenced last
month to up to 15 years in prison after pleading no contest to unlawful
imprisonment.

Police have been treating the case as a homicide investigation
and have said they don't believe Skelton's claim that he gave the boys
to an organization to protect them.

People gathered yesterday for a prayer vigil for three young boys who have been missing since last Thanksgiving.

Andrew, Alexander and Tanner Skelton disappeared from their father's home in Morenci near the Michigan-Ohio state line.

John Skelton pleaded no contest to unlawful imprisonment last month and was sentenced to up to 15 years in prison.

He says he did not hurt his children and he gave them to an organization to protect them.

But police believe it's a homicide case. They searched the area several times and found no clues leading to the boys.

Yesterday's vigil was held at a park in Morenci. Organizers dedicated a tree in the boys' honor.

Event to Honor 3 Missing Brothers To Be Held in November

Posted: Nov 15, 2011 10:09 AM CST

The family of three boys missing for a year plans to thank the community during an event to mark the anniversary.

Family friend Kathye Herrera tells The Daily Telegram in Adrian that the event is scheduled for November 27 at Lenawee County's Morenci High School near the Ohio-Michigan border.

Andrew, Alexander and Tanner Skelton were last seen at their father's Morenci home on Thanksgiving 2010. Police have been treating their disappearance as a homicide investigation.

The father, John Skelton, is in prison after pleading no contest to unlawful imprisonment. Police don't believe that he passed the boys to another person as he claims.

The event at the high school will include updates from the Morenci police chief and mayor, music and a video by the boys' mother, Tanya Zuvers.

A year later, Michigan town mourns 3 missing boys

DETROIT (AP) — Morenci Police Chief Larry Weeks recently served as a
guest spelling-test presenter for a fifth-grade class, and afterward
invited the students to ask questions. Amid the usual queries about
weapons and uniforms came one from a girl that reminded him how hard the
southern Michigan town has been hit by the disappearance of three young
boys who would have attended the school.
"She raised her hand and
asked how often I have investigated cases where parents have stolen
their children," Weeks said. "I struggled with responding to the
question. ... It concerns me how it's changed their outlook. Kids should
have the opportunity to be kids. To be thinking of that tells me that
they're worried, they're concerned. And that bothers me immensely."
One
year later, Weeks can point to successes in the case, such as the
conviction of John Skelton, the boys' father and prime suspect, on
unlawful imprisonment charges. But Weeks, the boys' family and other
residents of the close-knit community remain haunted by one reality:
Andrew, Alexander and Tanner Skelton have never been found.
The
Skelton brothers were 9, 7, and 5 years old, respectively, when they
went to spend last Thanksgiving at their father's home in Morenci, about
70 miles southwest of Detroit near the Ohio state line. The boys'
mother, Tanya Zuvers, had exclusive custody of them, but agreed to let
them visit their father nearby if he returned them the next day.
When
John Skelton didn't return them, Zuvers notified police, who arrested
Skelton and launched what became a massive search effort in the
following weeks. Cell phone records indicated Skelton left home the day
after Thanksgiving and drove at least as far as Holiday City, Ohio,
about 20 miles southwest, before returning home.
Despite the help of hundreds of volunteers searching fields and roadways in the often bitter cold, the search produced nothing.
The
unlawful imprisonment charge pertains to Skelton's failure to return
the boys to Zuvers the day after Thanksgiving. Skelton said he doesn't
know what happened to his children after he handed them over to a group
he hasn't identified to protect them from their mother.
Skelton
pleaded no contest to the charge in July in exchange for prosecutors
dropping a charge of parental kidnapping. He was sentenced in September
to 10 to 15 years in prison. His lawyer, John Glaser, objected to the
severity of the sentence, telling the judge, "My client is not here on a
murder charge."
Police don't believe Skelton's story but are nonetheless pleased to have him behind bars.
"It
gives us some breathing room to continue our investigation and search
for the boys," Weeks said. "The alternative is that he is released and
the primary suspect is on the loose."
Authorities plan to conduct
what they're calling a "road canvass" from about 4 a.m. to 7 a.m. Friday
along U.S. 127. Weeks said it coincides with the time exactly one year
earlier that police believe he made the 40-mile roundtrip from Morenci
to Holiday City and "disposed of the boys."
And while Friday's search area is not necessarily a hot target, Weeks said it's significant in terms of timeframe and terrain.
"It
is one year later, and memories are foggy," he said, adding that it
could bring something back for early morning hunters or Black Friday
shoppers. "Maybe it sparks a memory for them. ... Maybe it sparks a
conversation."
An event to mark the one-year anniversary of the
boys' disappearance is scheduled for Sunday in the Morenci High School
gym. Weeks will speak about the case and Mayor Keith Pennington is
scheduled to provide an update on a reward fund.
The Associated
Press left a message for Zuvers, who told The Daily Telegram of Adrian
for a story this week that the program will include a slide show of her
sons and items such as magnets, window decals and shirts will be sold to
raise awareness about the case. Proceeds will be used to cover
production costs.
She said it's important to keep "eyes looking" for the boys.
"My family has not given up hope that we are going to bring the boys home and they will come home alive," she said.
As
for Weeks, he shares the community's anxiety and desire to solve the
case. He said police have received about 1,200 tips and are confident
with the pieces they have been able to put together.
"The year has
allowed us to review and reflect what we've done," he said. "I think we
have a better understanding of what's transpired. We're ready to act on
new information as it's developed."

Search For Missing Boys Continues

Authorities are planning a search for three young brothers in Southeast Michigan who disappeared nearly a year ago.

Morenci police plan to search for Andrew, Alexander and Tanner Skelton
on Friday along U.S. Highway 127 in Lenawee County, near the
Ohio-Michigan border. Investigators say they believe that the boy’s 39
year old father, John Skelton, was driving on the highway around the
same time they went missing on Thanksgiving weekend a year ago. The boys
were 9,7 and 5 years old at the time of their disappearance. Polive
have said publicly the case would not turn out well, but the boy’s
mother, Tanya Zuvers, believes they are alive and will return home. She
thinks her ex-husband gave her children to someone, and that he did not
act alone. Skelton was sentenced in September to 15 years in prison on
charges of false imprisonment stemming from the disappearance of his sons.

Morenci police canvassed an intersection Friday, hoping to get new
tips about three missing brothers who disappeared a year ago and to give
information about the boys.
Police Chief Larry Weeks said
officers made contact with about 129 vehicles early in the morning at
the intersection of U.S.-127 and Morenci Road -- an area police believe
the boys' father, John Skelton, was driving during the same hours a year
earlier.
Andrew, Alexander and Tanner Skelton disappeared while in Skelton's custody over Thanksgiving last year.
Weeks said officials passed out flyers and spoke with some motorists, but he declined to say what was discussed.
Police said they believe the boys -- ages 9, 7 and 5 when they disappeared -- were killed. They have never been found.
Since
their disappearance, the brothers' birthdays have come and gone,
efforts to find them have continued and their father has been sent to
prison.
Skelton, who pleaded no contest to charges of unlawful
imprisonment, was sentenced in September to 10 to 15 years in prison.
According to the Michigan Department of Corrections, he is at the
Chippewa Correctional Facility in the Upper Peninsula.
Under the
plea deal, charges of kidnapping -- punishable by up to life in prison
-- were dropped. Weeks said Friday that police continue to actively
investigate the case and follow up on tips.
"People have asked me if it's a cold case," he said. "I don't feel like it is."
Skelton has said he doesn't know where his sons are, but claimed they are with members of an underground sanctuary group.
On
Sunday, the community will come together for a one-year anniversary
event, organized by the boys' family. A family spokeswoman said it will
include prayers, a tribute, music and a video by the boys' mother, Tanya
Zuvers.
The crime has had an impact on the community, even its youngest residents.
Weeks
said he was recently invited to present a spelling test for a
fifth-grade class in town. Afterward, he fielded questions from the
students about being a police officer.
One girl, he said, asked how often he investigates cases of parents stealing their children.
It's a thought no child should have to have, Weeks said.
"Kids," he said, "should have the opportunity to be kids."

John Skelton, the Michigan father whose 3 boys went missing: Whatever happened to ...?

Published: Monday, July 30, 2012, 5:55 AM
Mark Gillispie, The Plain Dealer

Skelton remains behind bars in a Michigan prison after pleading no contest to three counts of unlawful imprisonment in September 2011.

His three sons, Andrew, Alexander and Tanner, however, remain missing. Police in Morenci, Mich., long ago gave up hope that the three boys, who were 9, 7 and 5 years old, would be found alive.

The disappearance of the boys on Nov. 25, 2010, triggered a massive search for them in communities skirting the Ohio-Michigan border. Skelton, who was separated from his wife, was supposed to return the boys to her that day. He instead told his wife that a woman would be dropping off the boys.

Skelton asked a friend to take him to a nearby mental health hospital in Ohio the next day after he tried to hang himself. He also posted a Facebook message asking that God and his wife forgive him.

Tanya Zuvers had filed for divorce from Skelton in September 2010 after he had taken two of the boys out of school and had driven them to Florida to visit his family. He was granted visitation rights and had the boys for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Skelton gave authorities a number of different stories after the boys were reported missing. There were unconfirmed reports that he told the FBI he had killed his sons. He also told authorities he sent the boys away to prevent them from being abused by their mother.

Prosecutors in Lenawee County, Mich., originally charged Skelton with three counts of kidnapping, which carry a potential sentence of life in prison. He could still face murder charges should evidence be found linking him to the boys' deaths.

Morenci Police Chief Larry Joe Weeks says his department continues to work on the case on an almost daily basis.

"But there's been no significant break in the case, unfortunately," he said.

Based on cellular phone traffic, Weeks believes that the boys" bodies are somewhere within 80 miles of Morenci, which makes the search difficult.

Weeks said the case is bothersome from both a professional and a personal perspective. While there is a crime that needs to be solved, as a parent, he is bothered by the fact that no closure has been brought to the boys" mother and family.

"They're both equally as frustrating," Weeks said. "Probably the second more than the first."

Inmate pleads guilty to lying about missing Morenci boys

12:45 PM, September 15, 2013

ADRIAN — A jail inmate has pleaded guilty to lying to police when he claimed he knew the whereabouts of three young boys who disappeared three years ago.

Police say they think the boys are dead.

Nine-year-old Andrew, 7-year-old Alexander and 5-year-old Tanner Skelton were last seen at their father’s home in Morenci in 2010. They were to be returned to their mother, and the disappearance sparked a large search.

John Skelton says he didn’t harm his sons. He’s serving 10-15 years for unlawful imprisonment.

Fifty-year-old Robert J. Jamison of Adrian was charged last month with a felony of lying to police.

He pleaded guilty Friday in Lenawee County Circuit and faces sentencing Oct. 10.

Agency: State Police

LANSING. On the day after Thanksgiving 2010, three boys went missing in Morenci, Mich. The boys are Andrew, Alexander and Tanner Skelton. Since the day the boys went missing, their disappearance has been vigorously investigated by the Morenci Police Department, FBI and Michigan State Police (MSP). Significant assistance has also been provided by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

As this case enters its third year, investigators have re-examined the investigative resources assigned to the case, and after careful consideration, decided to have the MSP take the lead in the investigation. The resources available from the MSP will ensure the case continues to move forward no matter how long it takes to solve. The Morenci Police Department and FBI will continue as investigative partners in the investigation.

"This case is one of the most significant unsolved cases in Michigan," said D/F/Lt. Sean Furlong of the MSP First District Special Investigation Section. "Having the case at the MSP will ensure it receives the continued attention it deserves."

At the time the boys went missing they were in the care of their father, John Skelton. Skelton pled no contest to three counts of unlawful imprisonment in September 2011, after he claimed he gave the boys to unknown individuals. Skelton is currently serving a 10-15 year prison sentence.

The public is asked to provide any tips or information to the MSP at www.michigan.gov/michtip or by calling 1-855-642-4847.

Mother of missing Morenci brothers now believes they're dead

Posted: 05.12.2015 at 10:31 AM

MORENCI, Mich. -- The mother of three Michigan boys missing since Thanksgiving 2010 says she now believes they're dead.

Tanya Zuvers says she's hanging on to a sliver of hope, but she's almost certain they're dead.

The boys were last seen on Thanksgiving Day 2010 in their father's backyard in Morenci. They were to be returned to their mother and the disappearance sparked a large search. At the time, Tanner Skelton was 5, Alexander Skelton was 7 and Andrew Skelton was 9.

Dad John Skelton pleaded no contest to unlawful imprisonment and is serving 10 to 15 years in prison. He maintains he didn't harm his children. While serving time he has told authorities he gave Andrew, Alexander, and Tanner to an "organization."

The boys' disappearance led to a large search in Ohio and Michigan. Police believe the Skelton brothers are dead; however, they say their investigation is still active.

Zuvers tells The Blade she knows she'll be reunited with her boys in heaven.
