LAKE WORTH—
: The overnight search for a 12-year-old Lake
Worth girl ended just before 7:30 a.m. Wednesday when she approached an
officer just a couple blocks from where she'd gone missing.
Palm Beach County Sheriff's Detective Griselle Liriano said she recognized Tatiana by her footwear.
"I had just spoken with
somebody that told me one of the things she had on was bright green flip
flops, and as I looked over at her the flip flops kind of shined at
me," said Liriano, who was on Fifth Street this morning, just blocks
from the girl's home.
Tatiana eluded an extensive search that
began after her father reported her missing about 6:06 p.m. Tuesday, and
included deputies going door-to-door as others searched from the air. A
bloodhound also worked the surrounding neighborhood.
But Tatiana told investigators that when she saw all the police activity, she hid in an abandoned home in the area. She
came out of hiding Wednesday morning when thirst and hunger got the
better of her and she headed home, according to Sheriff's spokeswoman
Teri Barbera. After being checked out for any injury or illness, Tatiana
was reunited with her parents by 9:20 a.m., Barbera said.
"I
believe she thought she was in trouble, which is a kind of common," said
Sheriff's Capt. Carol Gregg who was also on the scene Wednesday
morning.
Tatiana is 12, but her family had told authorities that a
developmental disability gives her the mental capacity of a 5-year-old.
A
neighbor had seen the girl at 5:40 p.m. playing with animals in her
yard at her home on South M Street, south of Lake Avenue and east of
South Dixie Highway, according to a time line issued by the sheriff's
office.
Her father reported her missing about 25 minutes later, and the search by ground and air ensued.
The door-to-door search ended at 12:10 a.m., and a statewide Missing Child Alert was issued at 1:17 a.m., the timeline shows.
Sheriff's deputies resumed the door-to-door search about 6 a.m. Wednesday.
Authorities said they don't believe she was with anyone, and she appears unharmed and medically well.
