A file photo, released by National Center For Missing & Exploited
Children, shows a composite drawing of 9-year-old Jon-Niece Jones of
Harlem, whose skeletal remains were found in 2005. Three people,
including her aunt and uncle, have been charged with hindering
apprehension, tampering with evidence and obstruction of justice in the
cover-up of her death.
Skeletal remains found in a New Jersey park more than seven years ago have been
identified as a 9-year-old Harlem girl — and now three people, including
her aunt and uncle, face charges in her 2002 death.
A tipster helped investigators identify the remains as Jon-Niece Jones after the
famous “Baby Bones” case was revived with a segment on “America’s Most
Wanted” in 2009.
A DNA test of the remains, which included a skull and jaw, confirmed the tip, officials said.
Investigators believe Jon-Niece died at the Harlem home of her aunt, Likisha Jones,
on Aug. 15, 2002 after the child endured years of abuse by her mother,
Elisha Jones, Gramiccioni said.
Prosecutors alleged the mother, along with the girl’s uncle, James Jones, and her aunt’s boyfriend,
Godfrey Gibson, dumped the body and set it on fire about 70 miles away
in the Upper Freehold Township park.
The mother died four months later from natural causes.
A hunter found the child’s remains in a patch of tall grass at the park two and a half years later.
But once the bones were positively ID’d authorities booked Gibson, 48,
Likisha Jones, 39, and James Jones, 35, for hindering the apprehension
of another, tampering with physical evidence and obstructing
administration of justice.
“These arrests highlight the tireless efforts of detectives during this seven-year investigation,” said Col.
Rick Fuentes, superintendent of the New Jersey State Police.
“The family members of Jon-Niece Jones turned a blind eye to the constant
physical and mental abuse this girl endured for years. ... These three
suspects will now have to answer for their alleged unthinkable actions.”
