i think in past instances, the parents have been at the search sites, but depending on the terrain, they may or may not be able to participate in the actual search. During the caylee anthony search, we searched with TES and everyone wondered why the family wasn't at the search HQ site - during the Nadia Bloom search, LE would not allow private searchers (they didn't want to lose the searchers and have to redirect efforts to them and away from nadia) but someone searched on his own and found her. if they have a perimeter set up for kyron, they won't be allowing volunteers in. during haleigh's search, the family was at the site IIRC

interesting comments to the article -
* someone posted the dogs stopped at the parking lot
* someone posted about the dumpsters
* someone posted that the 18mon old was with friends while the stepmom ran errands after the program

it does make you wonder if there is more going on here - especially since they are searching the horman property today - i find it hard to believe that it wasn't thoroughly searched in the beginning but then again, things i thought they would be doing, they aren't. overall - a very strange case.

There are so many questions on this seventh day
of searching for a Portland boy.
A National Guard helicopter joined the search for 7-year-old Kyron
Horman. And as early as Friday, local crews will begin to help too.
Investigators who've searched for the missing boy for nearly a week
without success will soon get help from a number of search and rescue
crews from Lane County.
"There's always been an agreement in all 36 counties that if you need
us, we'll show up," said Linn County Sheriff Tim Mueller.
Horman was last seen a week ago after being dropped off at a school
science fair in portland. Authorities in Multnomah County report no new
results from their massive search.
"We don't have any further information specific to this investigation
at this time," said Capt. Jason Gates of the Multnomah County Sheriff's
Office.
Now the call for help is going out to agencies statewide.
"A lot of my searchers are parents. When it comes to a child, they're
on it," said Dep. Wade Martin of Lane County Search & Rescue.
Martin has lined up more than 25 Lane County Search & Rescue
volunteers to join the search.
"Their searchers are getting tired. Their command structure is
getting tired and they need relief," he said.
Local search teams, a half dozen mounted patrols, K-9 units will all
head north along with help from Linn County.
"Whether it's a criminal issue or a rescue issue, the object is you
work both points toward the middle and you bring that boy home," said
Sheriff Mueller.
Crews from around the region all hope to find the boy.
"You look for clues. Footprints, pieces of paper, clothing. Anything
that comes up, that's what they're looking for," said Martin.
Search crews from Linn county head up to the Portland area on
Saturday. Teams from Lane County will be present at the Multnomah County
Sheriff's Office briefing at 7 a.m. Friday for their assignments.

One week after an Oregon boy vanished inside his school, police have
no evidence to suggest the 7-year-old child was kidnapped. "There's
just no indication on anything we've got at this point that it was an
abduction," Multnomah County Sheriff Dan Staton said. "The child is
still characterized as a missing child." But Staton also warned
that time was running out in locating Kyron Horman. "We are still
within our threshold limits to find this child alive and we are making
every effort to continue that," the sheriff said. "But because we are
into day 7, obviously the percentages of finding him alive are growing
exponentially, and that is very concerning for us." Horman's
stepmother reported him missing on June 4 after he did not return home
from school, authorities said. The stepmother said she last saw
Kyron walking down a hallway towards his second-grade classroom at
Skyline Elementary School, according to police. "The last time
this child was seen was inside the school and was never seen leaving the
school," Staton reported. "There was nothing to indicate any kind of
disruption inside the school. This is why it's so concerning to us."
New search efforts are being expanded beyond a two-and-a-half mile
radius of the school, Staton said. Along with the continued use of air
support, canine units will assist in looking for Kyron. In
addition, Staton said search crews will focus on the overflow of streams
and wells in the surrounding area. For now, the case remains a
missing persons investigation. "We've got investigators that are
looking at every aspect; looking at every area of criminal categories,"
Staton said. "At this point, it hasn't reached the level that we are
looking at this as a crime." Staton also praised Kyron's family
for what he called being extremely cooperative. "Based on the
dynamics," Staton said, "people respond to this differently. Nothing
unusual to the way they are responding to this." In a statement
released Wednesday, Kyron's parents urged the public to continue helping
authorities look for their son. "Please search your properties,
your cars, your outbuildings, your sheds," the family said. "Also check
with your neighbors and friends who may be on vacation or may need
assistance to search their property. "There are a lot of
resources out there to help. Please don't stop." Staton said at
some point the family will want to step forward and speak in person.
"This has been very traumatizing for them," he said, "and they
prefer to remain tightly knit at this point." Staton called this
case especially disturbing. "We are talking about a school," he
said. "This is not about a child walking away in the woods or from a
store, this is a school and it should be one of the safest environments
other than your home."
Anyone with information
on the whereabouts of Kyron Horman is asked to call the Multnomah County
Sheriff's Office at 503-261-2847.

Kyron Horman search expands to include Sauvie Island with searchers
on horseback and in air

http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2010/06/kyron_horman_search_enters_eig.html
Published: Friday, June 11, 2010, 6:50 AM Updated: Friday, June
11, 2010, 11:17 AM

A week after Kyron Horman disappeared during a school science fair,
search and rescue teams hit the ground again this morning, urgently
hoping to find a trace of the little boy.

Although officials
have declined to provide details regarding the search parameters, it
appears that it has widened today.

Riders on horseback began
searching Sauvie Island this morning and a Blackhawk helicopter from
the Oregon National Guard could also be seen above the island. By 10:30
a.m., the helicopter had made at least two passes, along a north-south
line as the mounted riders began to head north along Sauvie Island Road.

Sauvie
Island resident Mary Douglas said she saw the helicopter flying over
the island on Thursday, but today was the first time she saw anyone
searching the ground.

A crew on horseback asked to check her
property this morning and went over her orchard by Multnomah Channel,
Douglas said.

Weather conditions for searchers were less than
favorable Thursday, with cool temperatures and steady rain making the
hilly, forested search area slick and muddy.

But today's weather
promised to be more suitable to search efforts -- mostly dry, warming
and partly sunny.

"Obviously the weather slows 'em down," said
Sgt. Diana Olsen, the search and rescue coordinator for the Multnomah
County Sheriff's Office, on Thursday. "But they are still going to be as
thorough ...they are going to keep on going."

Like Thursday,
TriMet buses carried searchers early today from the mothballed Wapato
Jail -- where they are staying -- to a base camp on Northwest Quarry
Road near a Multnomah County road maintenance shop. That is less than a
mile southeast of Skyline Elementary School, where Kyron was last seen
about 9 a.m. June 4.

At about the same time of day that Kyron was
last seen one week ago, officials were stopping cars along Skyline Road
this morning, just down the street from Skyline Elementary School.
They were asking drivers if they knew anything about the missing
second-grader.

An electric road sign at the intersection of
Cornelius and Skyline roads also displayed information, telling drivers
to turn on Skyline for the "missing boy interviews," and FBI officials
were seen on the school grounds this morning, as well.

The boy's
stepmother, Terri Moulton Horman, brought him to school early last
Friday to see his science project and left him after watching him walk
toward his classroom.

From the base camp, the searchers are
divided into teams and sent out to search and re-search different
pockets in the area.

Officials have declined to provide specifics of the search
parameters, saying it could hamper the investigation. However crews have
searched an approximate 2-mile radius surrounding the school and have
been seen along the roads leading from Skyline to the Horman home.

Though
investigators won't talk about how they think Kyron disappeared, the
all-out search is similar to what happens when children wander off on
their own. Authorities have characterized Kyron as a missing and
endangered child.

Multnomah County sheriff's Capt. Monte Reiser
acknowledged that people are wondering why investigators have released
so few details about the search and what they know.

If
information gets out too early or before authorities have substantiated
the tips, it "can affect the integrity of the investigation," he said.
"Misleading information can hamper both the search effort and the
investigation."

Incident commanders also said they would respect
the Horman family's wishes not to share their anguish with the public.

In
the meantime, Reiser said: "The search will continue dawn to dusk and
beyond."

Crews from Jackson, Tillamook, Klamath, Clackamas and
Washington counties and Pacific Northwest Search and Rescue set up a
base camp on Northwest Quarry Road at a Multnomah County road
maintenance shop, less than a mile southeast of the school.

trying to find Kyron Horman.
Waves of
searchers arrived in caravans at the camp from the county's mothballed
Wapato Jail, where they're sleeping. Some towed horses, mobile command
trailers and 4x4 ATVs, and others wore blaze orange and were packed into
TriMet buses. From the camp, they stuffed into vans, about a dozen at a
time, and dropped along gravel roads, steep roadside cuts, remote farms
and forested slopes.

Throughout the day, teams went back over
areas already searched in an arc around the school. They also searched
new areas based on hours of investigation, said Multnomah County
sheriff's Capt. Jason Gates.

Gates called the effort the most
extensive ever mounted in Multnomah County.

"This is
incredible," he said of the tide of searchers. "It's overwhelming. These
people, these men and women, are coming to us and have been all week.
... I just can't express what a huge help that has been."

The
searchers said they were more than happy to help. Eric Ronemus arrived
with the team from Jackson County and said he used to work with children
Kyron's age when he was a teacher. The story of the missing
second-grader hit home, he said.

"It's every school's nightmare
to have that happen," Ronemus said. "Hopefully, we will find him."

New
searchers bring much-needed fresh eyes to the effort, he said. "We're
able to take the time -- rather than the beginning of the search when
everything is done very, very fast -- and slow down."

Teams
across the state depend on volunteers like Ronemus -- people who want to
give back to their communities and lend a hand when needed, said Cpl.
Shawn Richards, the search and rescue coordinator for the Klamath County
Sheriff's Office.

"It used to be that if you had a situation
like this, you had to gauge what you threw at it within the first 24
hours because if you used everything up, you were done," Richards said.
"Now you can pretty much throw everything you have at it and know there
is going to be somebody there to have your back."

The family of missing 7-year-old Kyron Horman held a news conference
today near Skyline Elementary School in Northwest Portland.

Father
Kaine Horman and step-mother Terri Moulton Horman -- as well as the
boy's biological mother and step-father, Desiree and Tony Young -- stood
together and spoke at 1 p.m. at the church across from the school where
their boy went missing last Friday.

Wearing shirts and buttons
emblazoned with Kyron's picture, the 7-year-old's family reached out to
their little boy -- wherever he might be.

"Kyron," Tony Young said, his voice breaking. "We miss
you, we love you and we need you home right now."

Kaine Horman
asked the public to stay on the lookout for his son.

"Please help
us bring Kyron home," Horman said.

The transcript of the
statement (made by Tony Young):

"Hello, My name
is Tony Young and I am Kyron's stepfather. The family has asked me speak
on their behalf today. I would just like to say, Kyron, we miss you, we
love you and we need you home right now. We're doing everything we can
to work with law enforcement and the search and the rescue crews to make
sure you can get back to us as soon as possible.

"We want to say
how much we appreciate the outpouring of love and support, prayer and
thoughts as we wait for you. Your school friends and their families and
teachers and staff at your school and the community as a whole have
shown how much impact one little boy's smile can have on a community.

"You
mean everything to us and until you come home, this family is not
complete. Please Kyron keep up the hope. We believe in you and we know
you will be back with us soon."
Kaine Horman,
Kyron's father, then spoke:

"Hi, I'm Kaine. I'm
Kyron's father. We want to thank the community the parents, the
children, the bus drivers and all of those who are being interviewed
multiple times to help find Kyron. Thank you. We as the family know how
difficult and stressful this is, but your memories and statements can
help us find Kyron.

"We will never be able to thank you enough
for that help.

"Finally, we would like to thank the media. If it
was not for you showing Kyron on every newscast and printing his story
in the paper, his face would not be known to everyone. People from
around the nation have seen his picture. This helps tremendously.

"Please
help us bring Kyron home."
"This is the one week
anniversary, which is very sensitive to
us," said Capt. Mike Shults of the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office.

Shults,
who
has been with the family for the past week, also urged those taking
advantage of this weekend's weather to
keep an eye out for anything that might lead investigators to Kyron, and
asked for the public's continued support.

"Keep your prayers and thoughts on our little boy," he said.

YREKA, Ca. - Medford Police says a tip it received Friday that missing
7-year-old Kyron Horman of Portland may be down in in the Northern
California town of Yreka proved to be false.

According to the Oregonian newspaper, police received two tips that
Horman was seen in a Yreka WalMart. However, the boy that was seen on
video surveillance and seemed to match Kyron's description turned out to
be 10-years-old.

The incident prompted the Medford Police Department to post dozens of
missing person fliers all over the town.
Investigators say they will continue to expand their efforts, as they
have not yet ruled out the possibility of an abduction.

Kyron was last seen at Skyline Elementary School in Multnomah County at
about 9 a.m. Friday, June 4th walking to his classroom after his
stepmother dropped him off at the school's science fair. When he didn't
return home on the bus, his family called the school.

Due to the "sheer volume of supplies received,"
sheriff's deputies are asking the public to stop donating food and
supplies to crews searching for a missing Skyline Elementary student."We
will solicit further donations as they become needed. Again, we thank
you for your generosity," said Multnomah Lt. Mary Lindstrand in a news
release Saturday.People can still donate cash to the Kyron Horman Fund at
any Bank of America branch, deputies said Thursday. The donations will
offset search costs, deputies said, and also help missing and exploited
children. The 7-year-old was last seen June 4 after a morning
science fair. Since then, hundreds of searchers from across the state
have slogged through hilly terrain in northwest Portland in an
around-the-clock effort to find the boy.

she was like 'oh no where's Kyron there's only five' and Mrs. Porter
was like it's okay calm down, calm down he's probably in the bathroom or
getting a drink of water and she said alright I'm going to leave and
she left, " says Tanner Pumala. But, Portland Public School
spokesman Matt Shelby said the account can't be true: "There were no
substitutes at the school that day (the day Kyron disappeared)," he
said.
Shelby thinks Pumala may be confused because all week after
the disappearance a subsitute teacher has been at the school to help
with the stress of the Horman case.Tanner is Kyron's deskmate in
their combined second-third grade classroom. Tanner says Kyron was in
school for at least an hour Friday morning and that he saw Kyron's
step-mother leave the school without Kyron

Searchers continue to poke through the woods, fields and yards around
Skyline School, more than a week after the second-grader vanished.

Saturday
afternoon, Multnomah County Deputy Monte Reiser said those searchers do
not need more donations of food and supplies. He thanked those who
brought such donations, and also thanked the searchers themselves, many
of whom have experience with law enforcement agencies from across the
nation. After nine frustrating days in the field, Reiser says they
remain determined, and their morale is high. New volunteers continue to
appear, to bolster their ranks or to help relieve some who have spent
their time continually in the field.

Although no more food and
supply donations are being sought, cash donations are; the search effort
is growing increasingly expensive. Donations to the "Kyron Horman Fund"
can be made at Bank of America branches. Those monetary donations will
go toward paying the cost of the massive search effort.

While
they did talk about volunteer morale, the general public Tip Line
(503-261-2847), the many-layered investigation, and even about some of
Kyron's personality traits, the law officers provided little information
about that investigation and search itself. If any significant clues
have come along, they're not talking about them. They did say that some
disclosures could hinder their efforts, but didn't disclose what types
of information such disclosures could hinder.

At one point,
Search Commander Diana Olsen did say that, because so many possibilities
had been ruled out, that it allowed them to focus more on areas that
had not been ruled out. However, she did not say what actually had been
ruled out. She did say the search area had widened somewhat, and that it
was "flooded" with searchers. That search has now spread across Highway
30, to Sauvie Island, but most of the volunteers in the field are
concentrated within a couple of miles of Skyline School. She also said
that after the family's appearance at an earlier media briefing, the
number of called-in tips increased, but that the overall number of tips
was "manageable."

Multnomah County Sheriff's Captain Mike Shults
also talked some about Kyron Horman's likes, dislikes, hobbies and
character. He's described as a fun-loving boy who easily makes friends.
He was excited about his contributions to the science fair which he
attended with his step-mother the morning he disappeared.
Kyron and
his family had been looking forward to several trips this summer,
including journeys to Hells Canyon, Lake Shasta and Seaside, Ore. His
favorite color is red. And he had expressed a desire to be a police
investigator when he grew up.
