Re: KYRON HORMAN - 7 yo - Portland OR
Unusual events, nature of disappearance keep Kyron Horman saga in
national spotlight
Published: Saturday, July 17, 2010, 9:30 AMBruce Ely/The OregonianUnder
intense media scrutiny, Kaine Horman (with briefcase) and lawyer Laura
Rackner wait to cross Fifth Street in downtown Portland on the way to a
Thursday court appearance. Rackner and Horman were seeking to have his
wife Terri Moulton Horman removed from their home. The estranged couple
eventually decided that she had to leave the home by 3 p.m. Saturday.
More than a dozen journalists turned up even for a routine
closed-door meeting outside a judge's chambers. A People magazine
reporter has camped out in Portland for weeks. Websites devoted to the
case have popped up all over the Internet. And reader comments to online
stories have soared into the thousands.
All this for Kyron
Horman, who disappeared from Skyline School on June 4.
Thousands
of children vanish every year. But there are many reasons why the saga
of this 7-year-old boy has fueled seemingly insatiable curiosity
coast-to-coast.
For months, Americans have faced a steady
drumbeat of bad news that has been both overwhelming and impersonal.
Then comes the image of the innocent, bespectacled face with a
gap-toothed grim that tugs on hearts nationwide. The fractured family
dynamics and sensational twists in this story also have captivated the
public -- just as television soap operas reel in viewers day after day.
But
perhaps the biggest factor feeding interest in the Kyron story has to
do with the nature of his disappearance. Although hundreds of thousands
of children are reported missing every year, about 115 are serious cases
in which a child is abducted by a stranger and killed, held for ransom
or taken for another reason. Kyron's case, though still unsolved, falls
in this category, according to Ernie Allen, president of the National
Center for Missing & Exploited Children.
About a third of
those 115 kids are taken off the street or from a vehicle. The rest are
mostly snatched from their home, yard, park or wooded area or from a
store. Only two -- less than 2 percent -- vanish from a school or day
care.
"This is something that captures the attention of millions of
moms and dads across the country," Allen said. "If your children aren't
safe at school, where are they safe? That's one of the reasons why this
case has resonated well beyond Portland and well beyond Oregon."
The
image of Kyron's cute, smiling face that has been splashed on
billboards, television screens, in newspapers and magazines and on
websites has gripped the national psyche as well.
"He is
absolutely the portrait of vulnerability -- a small, fragile, utterly
defenseless 7-year-old child," said Alan Lipman, a clinical
psychologist and head of the Center for the Study of Violence in
Washington D.C. "To look at him is to see a small child who is utterly
unprotected against the threats that the world has to offer."
Stories
of other children who have vanished in the Northwest have captured
national attention -- but they haven't stayed in the spotlight the way
the Kyron saga has.
A year ago in the small town of McCleary
west of Tacoma, 10-year-old Lindsey Baum disappeared during a short
walk home from a friend's house about 9:30 p.m. on a Friday night. When
she didn't come home, her mom called police. The next day investigators
launched a massive search, employing dogs, horses and aircraft. The FBI
was called in. Dozens of officers were assigned to the case. National
television stations swooped in, broadcasting the image of the
brown-eyed, smiling brunette on nightly newscasts.
The story was
picked up by America's Most Wanted and her image appeared in a story
about missing children on People magazine.
But national media
outlets didn't stick with the story the way they're hanging on to
developments in the Kyron case.
So, why the difference? Both
disappeared in June at the start of a normally slow news period when
media are hungry for stories. Both involve blended families. Lindsey's
mother is divorced and Kyron has a mom, stepmom and dad and stepdad.
Both involve cute kids and have generated an outpouring of leads.
But Lindsey did not vanish from a school and Rick Scott,
undersheriff for the Grays Harbor County Sheriff's Office, which is
handling Lindsey's disappearance, said a "there are a lot of differences
in the dynamics of how those children disappeared."
In the past
year, investigators have looked into 4,000 tips about Lindsey Baum. The
Kyron case has generated 3,000 tips in five weeks alone.
Unlike
Lindsey's mom, the parents and stepparents of Kyron largely stayed out
of the public eye until recently. That -- and the tight-lipped
investigation -- has fueled an outpouring of speculation and opinion on
relatively new venues, from personal blogs to social media sites like
Facebook.
A Twitter account has been set up in Terri Moulton
Horman's name and the stepmom now has her own eponymous website -- run
by other people.
She's not said anything publicly. She's not
been named a suspect or even a person of interest. But the 40-year-old
woman with a mane of curly, red hair is clearly a focus of the
investigation -- and the media.
But take away the distressing
reality that Kyron is still missing, and you've got the makings of
summertime beach reading:
A timid 7-year-old boy vanishes from
school, prompting a massive search. The investigation stalls. The
parents and step-parents appear together but say little in two news
conferences. Then Kyron's dad, Kaine Horman, slips out of the family
home with his little half-sister Kiara. Terri calls 9-1-1. Two days
later Kaine files for divorce, and in a restraining order alleges a
murder-for-hire plot revealed two weeks ago by The Oregonian. He demands
that she leave the house they have lived in that he owns.

Horman's parents and stepparents prepare for a news conference at the
Brooks Hill Historic Church on June 11. The heavy media presence at the
event was an early indication of how the 7-year-old's disappearance was
capturing wide attention.
Then
allegations surface, accusing Terri of sharing sexual cell phone
messages and engaging in an intimate relationship with one of Kaine's
high school buddies.
That allegation pumped up public outrage
and more interest in Kyron, Lipman said.
"The story of marital
conflict creates further sympathy for Kyron and is something that people
understand," he said.
The story has a compelling human element
that the public needs to cling to right now after months of bad economic
news and frustrating stories from the oil-soiled Gulf, he said.
"There's
been a continuous stream of broadly based, difficult, depressing news
about the state of the nation, and an incident like this about a
beautiful young child suddenly disappearing can be a catalyst for the
nation to care about," Lipman said.
All the media attention has
not brought Kyron home but it could help, experts say.
"The
media generate awareness," said Allen, head of the missing child group.
"They generate leads."
But stories also fuel wild speculation,
comments and rumors on the Internet.
"There's good and bad,"
said Scott, the undersheriff for the Grays Harbor County. "It creates a
lot of false leads and rumors in the community that have to be sorted
through. But the good outweighs the bad by keeping the case alive for
the public."
And yet the intense spotlight can be difficult for
the family, with stakeouts and their every move captured by the media.
"It's
both a blessing and a curse on the family," said Al Tompkins, a faculty
member at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies. "But it seems to me
you get resolution in cases that might not otherwise get resolution on
because there's a lot more pressure on police to act because there are
more people watching."
It's not clear when investigators might
crack this case, but the national media are not likely to go away
anytime soon, Lipman said.
"I've never seen a case that once
it's started that they don't stay with the story until they know the
conclusion," he said.

Re: KYRON HORMAN - 7 yo - Portland OR
IMO, it's high time to redirect the focus away from the scandal surrounding Kyron's disappearance and direct it towards finding Kyron.
The media Q & A needs to be asking about what is being done for Kyron...report on the proceedings is fine, but wish they'd report on how this is all helping bring Kyron home, and what exactly is being done. Time to move forward and step out of the side show, imo.
I'm angry beyond words about how this case has become a soap opera in lieu of the serious matter of finding this precious child.

Terri out, Kaine and Kiara back in family's NW home
PORTLAND, Ore. --Terri Horman has moved out of the family home in Northwest Portland, according to a reliable source.
A car loaded with Terri Horman’s belongings zipped from the wooded drive just before 6 p.m. Friday evening. In the back seat were a small stack of boxes.
On Friday, Kaine Horman and his estranged wife came to an agreement for Terri to move out of the former family home in NW Portland by 3 p.m. Saturday, but a source tells KGW Teri Horman has already moved out and has returned to Roseburg, where she attended high school and where her parents still live.
As Terri's belongings were taken from the Horman home, Kyron's mother and father were visiting the 'wall of hope' at Skyline school.
They believe Kyron is alive, and they want his room filled with well wishes when he returns.
"We've come back several times to get bags full of cards and stuffed animals and all kinds of stuff," said Desiree Young.
"We want everyone to know that we've been coming up here quite regularly to pick things up and make sure they're going to get to Kyron when he comes home," said Kaine Horman.
With Terri Horman gone, Kaine said he intends to re-key the locks, change the gate code, and possibly replace certain doors and add additional locks.
Former Sheriff's Captain, Bruce McCain believes investigators will also take a very close look around searching for information about Kyron.
"It could be anything from cell phones, it could be notes, garbage cans. They'll be going through the trash," said McCain.
Terri, who was seen leaving her attorney's office Friday, has yet to comment on the case since becoming a focus of the investigation.
Though in the world of public opinion many consider her guilty, she remains uncharged and free to move wherever she wants.
"Out of town, out of state even because she's under no compulsion to stay in Oregon. She's not under arrest, she's not under probation, she's free to go wherever she wants," said McCain.
Kaine was told by police last month that Terri had tried to hire a man to kill him, according to a restraining order filed by Kaine. More: Murder-for-hire-plot
Kaine also recently filed papers to have Terri held in contempt of court and accused her of violating a sealed restraining order. That court motion also detailed an alleged sexual affair with one of Kaine's high school classmates, and a reported attempt to "abduct" the couple's young daughter Kiara.

Of particular interest, is source confirmation that the landscaper Terri Horman hired last fall, who worked on the Horman property, had met Kyron at the residence as well as the Skyline School, where his firm had been contracted to do some work.
Rudy Sanchez, of RS Landscape Maintenance since 2008 has told MCSO that Terri Horman attempted to hire him in a murder for hire plot against her husband Kaine. Sanchez then agreed to participate in a surreptitious sting that included a body wire and a 911 call where patrolman had to be told by detectives this was an “on the job” non-threat. As fairly isolated areas go, this one has had a fair share of 911 calls.
(*red by me, & take a look at the guy...OMG....)(*Note: Blinkoncrime.com was unable to confirm through the Multnomah County Jail the nature of the “hold” for Sanchez, and all persons are presumed innocent.

Does anyone know if this landscaper has a black truck?? This is real important. I saw a link about five days ago and I am going to search on the black truck. Someone at school saw Kyron get into a black truck. I will search for the link..

The mug shot on Blink’s site is not of Rudy S (which Blink says is the

Also, that other person is being held on a “USM Hold,” which means he is

God Bless,
Mercy

Kaine: Kiara misses her brother Kyron
http://www.kgw.com/news/local/Kaine-Horman-Kiara-misses-her-brother-Kyron-98626814.html
PORTLAND -- There's a reason why Kaine Horman wanted to return to his Northwest Portland home, and she's 20-months-old.
Answering questions submitted via email by KGW, the father of missing 7-year-old Kyron Horman said the toddler missed her older brother after his disappearance June 4, and continues to miss him.
Kaine Horman and Kiara moved out abruptly in late June after information emerged about a murder-for-hire plot hatched by Terri Moulton Horman. Friday, lawyers for the estranged couple agreed Terri would move out by Saturday and sources tell KGW she's already left their Northwest Portland home and returned to Roseburg.
In earlier court documents, Kaine explained that Kyron needs to return home and sleep in his own room. Kiara needs that same comfort.
"When we were at the house Kiara often would go into Kyron’s room," Kaine wrote, "looking for him and waiting for him to join her to play. I expect this will continue when we get back home."
Kaine said he's trying to nurture her "with as much love, routine, and support that I possibly can."
Kaine thanked family members and the greater community for supporting Kiara and him where they are now living, and hiding.
"Their love and support," he wrote, "has helped both of us be part of a home and a family, which has helped Kiara adjust as best as possible."

Terri Horman reveals herself in profile surveys
http://www.kgw.com/news/local/Insights-to-Terri-Horman-98377499.html
PORTLAND, Ore. -- The results of two online surveys posted on Terri Horman's Facebook page provide a unique chance to see how Kyron Horman's stepmom perceives herself.
While police have not named Terri as a suspect, court filings by Kaine Horman say police gave him "probably cause" to believe she was involved in the missing boy's disappearance.
The survey results were posted June 19, 2009, after Terri's daughter was born but nearly a year before her stepson Kyron disappeared.
Psychologists KGW spoke to call the surveys "projective" because those who fill them out project their psychological feelings onto the questions posed.
In the first survey posted on Terri Horman's Facebook page, a question asks: "What are 2 of your favorite things to do?" The answer posted is: "lift weights and gardening."
Another question asks: "Two things you want very badly at the moment." The answer: "Teaching job & to be in bikini shape.
Yet another question asks: "What was the last heavy item you lifted?" The answer: "40# dumbbells."
Terri Horman was a competitive body builder in 2005.
The entire survey carries 67 questions. A count of the answers shows 25% of the answers dealt with working out or the body. Eight percent of the answers mentioned her toddler Kiara. Three percent related to her husband Kaine. Zero percent mention her step son, Kyron.
The survey also asked about plans for "tonight" (note - the survey was posted back in June of 2009.) The answer: "Working on Farm Town and playing a little World of Warcraft. Farm Town is a game played on facebook. World of Warcraft is an online video game played by millions of people.
The same survey asks: "Would you be a pirate?" The answer posted at the Horman site: "If I could look as good as Kiera Knightly."The British actress is best known for her movies, Bend it like Beckam and Pirates of the Carribean.
A second survey posted on Terri Horman's site continues with more questions.
One reads: "Close your eyes for a moment, who pops into your head?" The posted answer: "My sleeping daughter."
It also asks: "If you were an animal in the wild what would you be?" The posted answer: "Cougar."
Still another question reads: "If you could be someone else for a day who would it be?" The answer: "Xena."
Xena is a fictional warrior princess from a TV show.
The survey continues: "If you won the lottery how would you spend your millions?" The answer: "On family first, save some and donate to the needy."
Finally, the survey asks "If you could have one super human power what would you choose?" The answer:"Read minds."

however, said Terri Horman's parents were still around Saturday. Jeff

Kaine Horman answers KATU's questions
http://www.katu.com/news/local/98654424.html
Snipped this bit.
KATU: Kaine, why did you and Terri switch cars the day
Kyron disappeared? Did you typically drive the white truck, and Terri
the red mustang? Did she request to have the truck that day?
Kaine: I typically drive the truck and Terri drives the
car. She wanted to use the truck to bring Kyron’s science fair project
home, easier done with the truck than the car, although she did not stay
for the duration of the science fair - per her statements that the
media has reported.
This in interesting and raises further questions. Kaine says Terri was going to pick up the project, not take it to school. That sounds like she had definately taken the project the day before as some of us thought might have been the case. I guess she would have borrowed the truck the day before as well. It doesn't make sense then why she and kaine didn't drive together to school to pick up Kyron and his project.

Re: KYRON HORMAN - 7 yo - Portland OR
I read elsewhere a discussion about why Kaine and DY are convinced that TH has an accomplice which made a lot of sense to me and it's related to the LD tests. If TH was not deceptive to the question did you hurt/kill Kyron, but was deceptive to the question do you know who took Kyron(or do you know what happened to Kyron) that would explain their assumption that someone else is involved but TH is in on it too. If this is their only reason for their belief TH and someone else did this then I have a huge problem with it. We know that LD tests cannot be relied on, and in this case being deceptive or having an inconclusive outcome to some of the questions is a thin thread to use. TH may have her own suspicions who took Kyron - the Gardner for instance, and could then easily cause the LT test to look like she has first hand knowledge when she may not. The fact remains that for Kaine and DY to believe that TH has arranged for someone else to do this to Kyron TH must have passed the polygraph question did you hurt/kill Kyron on June 4th IMO.
The other reason that perhaps they have come to the conclusion that someone else is involved is maybe through CTV video etc TH's statements about what she did that day have been verified and she has an alibi. All this is very troubling to me as either way it makes me lean toward her innocence rather than guilt because I can't imagine TH would have an accomplice. What would their motive be and would she take that risk and why would she need anyone else? She would have been capable of dealing with a 7 year old all by herself. It's very rare for people to commit cold blooded, premeditated murder of a child, let alone find 2 people who decide to do it together. Only one person can have a strong enough motive, in their warped mind, to carry out such a heinous crime.
BTW obviously I do not believe that Kyron is being held somewhere, I believe he was dead long before the alarm was raised, although I sincerely hope that I am wrong but I can't see what that was supposed to have achieved.
Anyway, just throwing my thoughts out there as I like to keep an open mind and discuss all possibilities until we learn what the investigators know.

Search for Kyron Horman: Father Alleges Terri Horman Had Help With Son's Disappearance
Terri Horman Has Moved Out on Judge's Orders; Kaine Horman Has Changed Locks on Family Home
By MIKE von FREMD and SARAH NETTER
July 19, 2010
The father of missing Oregon boy Kyron Horman said he now believes there was someone else aiding his estranged wife with his son's disappearance.
Kaine Horman, who was able to move back into the family's Portland home with the help of a judge's order, declined to say exactly why he believes a third party involved, but told The Oregonian in a statement that his opinion was "based upon briefings."
Terri Horman, the last person known to see 7-year-old Kryon alive, is living with her parents, 170 miles away from the home she once shared with the little boy, her husband and the couple's 20-month-old daughter. A judge ordered her out of the home over the weekend, just weeks after Kaine Horman fled with their little girl amid reports that Terri Horman allegedly approached the landscaper about killing him.
Kaine Horman also told The Oregonian that he changed the locks on the house's doors and fence.
Terri Horman has not been charged or named a person of interest in Kyron's disappearance or in the alleged murder-for-hire plot, but police and the second-grader's family are hoping the pressure she's now living with will cause her to crack.
"Catching criminals is a lot like catching fish," said criminal defense attorney John Hingson III, who is not involved with the Horman case.
"What you need to do is to let the fish run and don't try to grab him before it's too early. The police are letting Terri Horman run."
Terri Horman and her attorney have declined to comment on the allegations made by Kyron's parents. Her lawyer, Stephen Houze, said that his client has been receiving death threats and that the media frenzy surrounding the case has morphed into a "witch hunt."
Bruce McCain, a retired captain with the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office, which is investigating Kryon's disappearance, said the case was at a crossroads and will remain that way until investigators can determine whether Kyron is dead or alive.
"Kyron is the absolute key," he told "Good Morning America." "Without Kyron's status known there probably won't be an arrest any time soon.
Kyron disappeared from his elementary school science fair on June 4.
While Terri Horman was seen by her husband's side, presenting a united front with Kyron's biological mother and her husband, the family began to distance themselves from her within weeks.
Kyron's parents have publicly said they believe Terri Horman had something to do with the little boy's disappearance and his mother, Desiree Young, has pleaded with her more than once to tell police what she knows.
Kaine Horman, who was granted an emergency restraining order to keep his wife away from him and their daughter, filed for divorce last month, but it still wearing his wedding ring.
He told ABC's Portland affiliate KATU that even that decision was part of the plan to find Kyron.
"I think I keep it on as a symbol of our family and more for our kids than anything else," he told KATU. "It will come off at some point but right now the priority is getting Kyron home and taking care of Kiara."
McCain said Kaine Horman's public statements and accusations against his estranged wife are "very, very telling" with regards to what information the family and investigators have.
But until Terri Horman starts cooperating, it will be up to investigators to remain engaged in "cubicle warfare" -- tracking down every lead and continuing to keep the pressure on.
"Right now Teri Horman is doing a very good job remaining tight lipped," McCain said.
