A
16-year-old who went missing Tuesday night was found Wednesday evening
after rescuers from 20 different agencies spent almost 24-hours
searching for the boy.
Robert Lee Nelson, 16, was found at his
ex-girlfriend’s parent’s house off Watershed Road in the Pine Ridge
community at 7 p.m., according to Lt. David Hamlin with the Surry County
Sheriff’s Office. Nelson left a note saying that he loved his family,
but just needed to get away. Hamlin said Nelson was “not very
forthcoming” about how he got to the home in Pine Ridge, but said he had
ridden with a man in a black vehicle.
Hamlin said deputies
checked the residence earlier in the day, but no one was home. The
mother of Nelson’s ex-girlfriend saw the Silver Alert on television
reporting Nelson was missing and called the boy’s grandfather to tell
him of Nelson’s whereabouts, who then called authorities. Hamlin said no
criminal charges will be forthcoming since Nelson didn’t break any
laws.
Nelson, who lives at 184 Fort Worth Lane, off Pilot Power
Dam Road in Pilot Mountain, was reported missing at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The Surry County Sheriff’s Department went to the residence to track the
teen with K-9 dogs.
When Nelson wasn’t located by lunchtime on
Wednesday, a mobile command center was set up to manage rescuers who
came out to search in frigid temperatures. Most of the searchers were
volunteers who left work to join in the search. The massive search was
discontinued at dusk as bloodhounds were called in to continue looking
for Nelson.
In addition to rescuers, two helicopters, one from
AirCare and the other from the North Carolina Highway Patrol came in to
search from the air. Off road vehicles and ATVs were used in the search.
Dennis Manual, chief of the Pilot Mountain Rescue Squad, said
rescuers thoroughly searched a one-mile radius around Nelson’s home. He
thanked everyone for their efforts as they prepared to leave at sunset.
The
following agencies assisted with the search: the Pilot Mountain Rescue
Squad, Pinnacle Rescue Squad, Mount Airy Rescue Squad, Elkin Rescue
Squad, Dobson Rescue Squad, South Surry Fire and Rescue, Mountain Park
Rescue Squad, the American Red Cross, the N.C. State Highway Patrol, the
Surry County Sheriff’s Department, Surry County 911 Communications
Center and Surry County Emergency Management officials. Members of the
White Plains, Shoals, Ararat, Four Way and Bannertown, Pilot Knob and
Double Creek volunteer fire departments also aided in the search.
