ISIAH JONES - 8 yo - Norfolk VA
The song in 8-year-old Isaiah Jones' heart is a joyful one.
"Bless the lord. I'm singing."
The young boy is full of love and energy.
Seven years have passed since police say Isaiah's father, Walter
Speller, beat him so badly that Isaiah was left completely blind,
partially paralyzed, and brain damaged.
It's a day Isaiah's mother, Khalisha Jones, will never forget.
"All I could do is kneel down on my knees and cry. I said he did this to my son," Jones said.
Walter Speller served two years in prison for nearly killing his own son.
After he was released he had another son by another woman. Police say
two years ago Speller beat that son and his sister so severely he
paralyzed them as well.
"Two more innocent kids that had nothing to do with his problems,
nothing to do with whatever he was going through. He takes his anger
out on kids," Jones added.
Walter Speller will be sentenced Friday, February 5 for his most recent violent beatings.
Khalisha Jones hopes this time the punishment fits the crime.
"With him doing this again, it just shows that he didn't learn his lesson the first time."
Isaiah, who loves to sing, tell jokes, and take naps, outshines the physical scars his father left behind.
"When we go out to go see Christmas lights or when we go out to do
things I can't say Isaiah look at this, you know," Jones said.
Jones is determined to always be her son's eyes.
"I want this to be a lesson to anybody, don't take anything like this
lightly, kids are precious. They don't deserve to be here on this Earth
to be beat on, to be punched on, to be shaken up."
Jones will be in court Friday to see for herself if justice will be served.
"I really hope that he really thinks about this, really hard and I just don't want to see it happen to anyone ever again."
Walter Speller plead guilty to two counts of Aggravated Malicious Wounding last September.
He faces between 12 and 21 years in prison under the terms of his plea agreement.
He will be sentenced in Norfolk Circuit Court.
