Disappearance

Tuesday marks the 5th day that
Kyron Horman has been missing and the latest news has provided no new
information to curious Oregonians praying for his return. But that
doesn’t mean that police haven’t learned more and more every day and it
certainly doesn’t mean they don’t know what might have happened to
Kyron.
The Multnomah County Sheriffs Office has held twice daily news
breifings and have had few details for those listening. Reading between
the lines, however, can tell us a lot.
First, the principal of Skyline, speaking along the police,
classified the search as a criminal investigation. This likely means
they have ruled out the idea that Kyron walked away from the school on
his own. Authorities know something that tells them Kyron was forced to
leave Skyline Elementary.
The FBI was called in very early on in the investigation. The have
since posted an alert at FBI.gov
to warn Americans that Kyron is in danger. The FBI has also brought in a
profiler, along the lines of the popular TV show Criminal Minds.
Not something you’d expect the FBI to do if they believed that Kyron
was simply missing in the woods or taken by a family member.
Additionally, it is well known that that Kyron’s step mother dropped
him off at school at 8:30am on Friday. She has told police that the last
time she saw the 7 year old is when she left at 8:45am. Now, police
have communicated that someone saw Kyron at 9am but they refuse to say
who, where at and what the circumstances where. The 9am event and
mystery witness may hold the key to what happened to Kyron that fateful
morning.
Finally, in the Tuesday noon press briefing by the Multnomah County
Sheriffs office, Cpt Jason Gates refused to answer key questions from
reporters. These questions included “is there any indication that a
stranger was inside Skyline Elementary on Friday morning” and “Are
searchers now focusing on specific search areas now rather than all the
area around Skyline Elementary?” His standard response was to say that
he could not give out those details. Does this mean there are details to
give out?
So what have authorities learned over the past 5 days of
investigation? It seems they have learned enough to eliminate the idea
that Kyron left on his own, enough to focus on specific geographic areas
in their search and enough to avoid questions about the presence of a
stranger inside Skyline Elementary school on Friday morning, June 4th.
This is good news in way, it means that law enforcement is doing
their job and getting closer to finding Kyron.

Update: Cops "Not Giving Up Hope" as Search Enters Fifth Day
Posted by Carlin
DeGuerin Miller
PORTLAND, Ore. (CBS/AP) The search for Kyron Horman entered
its fifth day Wednesday as searchers continued to work to find the
7-year-old boy who disappeared after a science fair at his elementary
school in a rural area of Portland, Ore.PICTURES:
Kyron Horman Missing The challenging
search continues to focus on the city's metro area and the dense hilly
terrain ardespite receiving tips from as far away as Washington state.
At least one person was injured Monday on an embankment near a rural
road and had to be taken away by ambulance. Multnomah
County sheriff's Capt. Jason Gates said at a press conference that
although the sheriff's office will "continue this investigation until
there's a resolution," he hopes to have the search concluded by the end
of the week. "I'm certainly not giving up hope," Gates
said. Gates also said that the case continues to be
considered a "missing endangered child" investigation and has not been
classified as a criminal case. Gates said that "when we have elements or
specific information about this case that would lead us in a direction
where there are crimes" the sheriff's office will begin a criminal
investigation.

Kyron was last seen about 9 a.m. Friday, shortly after the boy
and his stepmother attended a science fair at the school. She has told
police that she last saw him walking down a hallway toward his
second-grade classroom, wearing a "CSI" T-shirt and dark cargo pants.PICTURES:

A search began after Kyron didn't return home on the bus, and it was
revealed that he had not been in class all day. Kyron's parents say they
were not notified by the school until they called the school looking
for him. Gates said nearly all of the students at
the school have been interviewed, as well as the majority of the
faculty and staff. He said that investigators "have no reason to believe
this is anything but an isolated case," and that area families need not
take extra precautions with their children. Kyron's
parents are expected to release their first statement sometime
Wednesday, and Gates said that a sheriff's deputy has been with the
family at all times. He added that the search effort, which includes 22
state, local and federal agencies, is approaching the largest ever
conducted by the county.Anyone with information on Kyron's
whereabouts is urged to call the Multhnomah County Sheriff's Office tip
line at (503)-261-2847.

Re: KYRON HORMAN - 7 yo - Portland OR
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is bringing more tools to help in
the search for missing Portland 7-year-old Kyron Horman.
The FBI is adding a mobile
command center to the search effort Wednesday, with hopes that it
will help searchers. Meantime, the search crews themselves are doing
everything they can to stay focused and positive.
"It's always frustrating when we're not finding anything, especially
when we have such high hopes. But we're going to keep on until something
happens," one searcher told KGW.
Capt. Jason Gates, the main spokesperson for the investigation, said
there was no set ending for the search effort. He declined to say how
many more clues investigators have received but said "we haven't
received enough tips to solve the case. Keep those tips coming."
He said the family would release a statement Wednesday.
Family asks for community's help
Kyron's family has kept private during the search but reached out to
the public for the first time Monday night. Kelly Ramirez, the sister of
the boy's mother, issued a statement Monday evening thanking everyone
who has "worked tirelessly on Kyron's behalf" and asked people to print
and distribute fliers with the boy's photo.
"Above all do not give up hope, as we certainly never will," Ramirez
said. "He is out there and we are going to find him and bring him home
safe where he belongs."
More than 1,200 tips received
In a Monday afternoon news conference, Capt. Jason Gates said police
had received more than 1,200 tips and were following up on hundreds of
leads pouring into a special tipline.
TIP LINE: (503) 261-2847
Those leads involved information being sent to state and federal law
enforcement agencies from across Oregon and in parts of Washington.
“Kyron, we’re going to get you home buddy,” Gates promised earlier,
his voice cracking and his eyes tearing up. "Nothing is more important
to your family, your friends and to us."
Noteworthy in the afternoon press conference was the information
Gates would not share. The Captain said investigators were not ready to
release information about who saw Kyron last, or whether he attended his
first class.
Boy missing since Friday
Kyron Horman and his step-mother, Terri Moulton Horman, arrived at Skyline Elementary School
around 8 a.m. Friday and attended a science fair at the school. Around
8:45 a.m. Terri said goodbye to Kyron and watched the second-grader walk
down the hallway toward his classroom. Police say that the last time
the boy was seen was about 9 a.m.
At 3:45 p.m., when the school bus arrived at Kyron's stop without him
on board, his step-mom called the school. She was told he was marked
"absent" by his teacher. She called 9-1-1 just before 4 p.m. and the
search effort was launched.
Portland schools sent an automated message to parents in the school
district that the boy was missing. Meanwhile, police walked the school
grounds with K-9 tracking teams, searched every room and closet inside
the school and even checked the roof.
FBI and police coordinating search effort
The search quickly snowballed as word of the little boy’s
disappearance spread among the small school’s community in Northwest
Portland. Police said the search area was spread across 20 miles of
roadway and two square miles of land. Officers also handed out fliers
and questioned drivers and area residents Monday.
By Monday, the search included 22 law enforcement agencies, according
to Capt. Gates.
Investigators were trying to interview all the families of some 300
Skyline students. Gates said parents had been very cooperative.
Capt. Gates said 1,200 tips had been received by Monday, and
characterized some as "viable leads", but pleaded with people to call
with more tips. "Every tip, no matter how insignificant, is important to
us," he said.
Sheriff Dan Staton said late Sunday night that he was "not prepared"
to call the boy's disappearance a kidnapping. He described Kyron as a
"missing endangered child" because more than two days had elapsed since
he disappeared and because search efforts were hampered by rainy
weather.
"We have developed a lot of information which has to be processed
thoroughly, and I am not in a position to divulge any specifics of our
investigative plan at this time," Staton said in a statement.
Police indicated their search was not limited to the area around the
school but they would not specify where else they were searching.
An FBI profiler was studying everything from Kyron’s schoolwork to
his friends, to try and determine where the little boy might be. Two
local criminal experts told KGW that if Kyron was kidnapped, he believes
all the clues point to someone who knew the boy, not a stranger.
Investigators on Sunday interviewed parents of other students at the
school, trying to come up with even the smallest clues about what could
have happened. The parents and Kyron’s fellow students came to the
school voluntarily on a staggered basis to interview with detectives.
Authorities were also reviewing photos and videos taken during the
school's Friday morning science fair, where several people reported
seeing Kyron.
Kyron described as a "really good kid"
Parent Gina Zimmerman said she last saw Kyron in the morning, when he
posed in a classroom in front of his "red-eyed tree frog" science
project. She said her daughter is one of Kyron’s best friends and she
knew him well.
Zimmerman said that Kyron was not the type of child to wander off.
"He knows 'stranger danger," she said. "He's a really good kid."
Parents were shocked at the disappearance, she said, and have been
calling to share concerns at "our little school where everyone knows
everybody."
To try and quell those fears, security was increased at the school
Monday. Counselors were also on hand to talk to distraught students and
staff members. In addition, the district began mandating the use of an
automated attendance call system to notify families of any unexcused
absences.
No Amber Alert issued
Some parents wanted to know why an Amber Alert wasn’t issued. Sheriff
Gates said that tool works only when citizens can be offered
descriptions of specific suspects or vehicles, which was not the case in
this situation.
Parents were urged to talk to their children about stranger danger
and explain what to do if they were in Kyron’s situation.
Distraught family working with detectives
Meantime, Kyron’s family was doing the best they could to cooperate
with police and talk with searchers under traumatic circumstances, Capt.
Gates said. The birth mother came to Portland after her son was
reported missing and all the parents have been in constant contact with
detectives, he said.
Anyone who has seen Kyron or knows of his whereabouts was
asked to call (503) 261-2847.

school voluntarily on a staggered basis to interview with detectives.

PORTLAND, Ore. - The search for the missing 7-year-old Skyline School student expanded Wednesday as investigators brought in the sheriff from Klamath County who is experienced in searches to help in the investigation.
Watch Wednesday's 4 p.m. news conference (Due to a technical difficultly, only the first portion is available at this time)
In addition to bringing in Sheriff Tim Evinger, Multnomah County Sheriff Dan Staton, said hundreds of additional searchers will arrive Wednesday evening to aid in the search for second grader Kyron Horman.
“We’ve expanded all of our operational phases at this point,” Staton said. “We’re going to continue this search until it is resolved.”
Evinger said his main role will be as a consultant as well as to help to get other resources into the search.
He said he was impressed with the work that has been done so far.
“The amount of cooperation between federal and local partners is amazing. ... This is a very well-oiled machine and a very good operation,” he said.
Evinger said the additional searchers, who are coming from other counties, will be housed in the Wapato facility.
“It is our goal to get as many on the ground as possible, immediately,” he said.
He said he plans to remain until at Thursday to help get those resources in place.
Horman’s immediate family released a statement through Multnomah County sheriff’s Capt. Mike Shults, and in it they thanked everyone for their “support and interest” in finding Horman. “The outpouring of support and continued effort strengthens their hope,” the statement said.
Additionally, they urged people to search their properties and check with neighbors and friends who may have been on vacation. According to the statement, the family wants to speak to the public but “their objective is to keep the focus on Kyron and not about anything else.”
During a 4 p.m. news conference, authorities again asked people who live in a four-mile radius of Skyline to check their properties again.
For almost a week Shults has been the family’s liaison.
“I carry the burden of the sadness, and the pain that they’re experiencing,” he said.
He’s been with the family nearly around the clock and only went home to sleep.
Horman’s teacher, Christina Porter who marked him absent last Friday, wrote her own statement which was read by Skyline’s principal, Ben Keefer during a noon news conference.
“’The students in Kyron’s class miss him terribly and we are all wishing for his safe return. As their teacher my goal has been to continue our familiar routine and to help my students stay focused on learning, what they need to know by the end of the year so that they are well prepared.’”
Meanwhile, the search continued for the sixth day on Wednesday and authorities said their efforts have not slowed.
“It’s still going full steam ahead,” said Multnomah County sheriff Sgt. Diana Olsen, who is in charge of the county’s search efforts.
The FBI brought in a special mobile command center from the Operational Technology Division Wednesday to assist law enforcement agencies coordinate their investigation and the search.
It will allow investigators to communicate through microwave and satellite communications. Additionally, they will now have access to high-speed Internet, helps with logistics, and gives detectives more room to work. But it won’t help in processing evidence, that will we be done someplace else.
Horman’s biological mother lives in Medford and family and friends there have also been posting fliers about the boy’s disappearance. Horman often played with children in his mother’s neighborhood and people there said he was not the kind of boy who would just wander off.
“It’s just pretty odd that Kyron would just - it’s kind of unexplainable - the feeling knowing that your kid is missing like that, words just can’t express,” said neighbor Cherie Cassidy.
Cassidy also said Horman was shy and well-behaved. Horman’s biological mother is in Portland helping investigators with the search.

All,
If you have seen local Oregon news or been browsing the internet or FaceBook there is a good chance you have seen an article similar to the one that Becky forwarded (below). While this note is difficult for me to write in this state of mind I felt it necessary for Kyron’s sake.
Optional actions for you:
The Intel network is large and wide-reaching. Many have asked me what they can do to help us and my answer is the following:
1. Forward Kyron’s information to as many people as you feel comfortable with; the more people that see this will increase our chances of finding him
2. Do not speak to any media if contacted; I am trying to contact Intel legal to give them the heads up and help with this situation
Physical description at the time of his disappearance (picture is show in Becky’s note and here):
He is 3 foot 8 and 50 pounds, with blue eyes and brown hair. He was wearing black cargo pants, white socks, worn black Sketcher tennis
shoes with orange trim and dark-colored t-shirt with the "CSI" show logo
Police Hot Line Number:
(503) 261-2847
Some rough background:
The article that Becky forwarded is pretty accurate with details. He was dropped off at school about 8:45 and went missing sometime between then and 9 or 9:30am. We did not know he was not at school until we went to get him off of the bus at 3:30 and he was nowhere to be found. The bus driver immediately called the school which responded that his teacherhad not seen him all day in class, at which point we notified police in partnership with the school. It is still unknown whether he left school grounds on his own or was abducted. Be assured that there are currently an amazing number of agencies and amount of person-power being applied to the search and investigation.
Thank you all for the thoughts and prayers for Kyron’s safe return. I will update the group once status changes which will hopefully be soon. At the time of this note Kyron has now been missing for ~48 hours; time is of the essence.

Re: KYRON HORMAN - 7 yo - Portland OR
As the search for missing Kyron Horman stretches into another day, two
top Portland private investigators say they don't think a stranger
played a role in his disappearance.
Kyron, 7, was last seen by his stepmother walking towards his classroom
following a science fair at his school on Friday morning. When he didn't
arrive home on the school bus, his parents learned he wasn't in class
all day.
Criminal profiler Dr. Ron Turco said, "Something doesn't fit. He was an
intelligent boy and was very proud of what he did at school.
"You have to hypothesize that he went with someone he knew. A family
member or someone associated with the family, " said Dr. Turco.
Investigator
and former Portland Police Detective CW Jensen echoes that. "To me, it
seems strange."
It should be noted that neither Turco nor Jensen are involved in
Kyron's case -- they are only speculating based on their years of
experience.
Meanwhile, detectives are keeping relatively quiet about their
investigation, only saying that Kyron is an "endangered missing child."

My sentiments exactly........if stepmom says she last saw him at 845 AM headed towards his classroom, but he wasn't there in class at 9 AM, that leaves an extremely small window of opportunity for a stranger to abduct him.....

Re: KYRON HORMAN - 7 yo - Portland OR
On the topic of frequent news conferences, in some respects, I'm glad for the updates, but on the other hand I question if they are too frequent. I'm not certain that the statements are beneficial. I wonder if it were my child, would I want LE doing updates so often, or doing something else to get to the bottom of what happened. I don't like to think that the conferences take time away from the investigation. Surely it takes someones valuable time to prep the statements, etc. I know the community is uneasy and needs SOME info, but would the time be better spent doing something else? Like I said - I'm torn on this issue. Not faulting LE or public. I also wonder if the statements are revealing facts about where nd when searches are being conducted.... may provide information to a possible abductor that may drive him/her deeper into hiding, IF in fact, there is an abductor.

Re: KYRON HORMAN - 7 yo - Portland OR
Good points, vinetender...Welcome to our home...You make some very good points...This whole case is beyond comprehension...IMO...Just taxing....Heartwrenching, and all that comes with another child "out there" somewhere...There is much more to this case than LE is willing to state, IMO, at this point...Been reading around all night, and don't have a clue where they are headed with this...Don't want to share "rumors", but it obviously doesn't look good after all this time...Be well, prayers continued for this child....and many others.... My problem is, in the spiritual sense, "God is good"..."God will protect them"...etc....As a product of a different culture, and yet God-fearing...with all due respect, where does God fit in??? Where is His divine protection???....Just asking? (No offense meant)...In this life, too much pain, and agony, especially for the innocent, little ones...I don't get it...At all...Please find this child, and keep him safe...vinetender wrote:On the topic of frequent news conferences, in some respects, I'm glad for the updates, but on the other hand I question if they are too frequent. Re: KYRON HORMAN - 7 yo - Portland OR
I also think the twice daily updates are overkill - all they are saying is "no comment" now, they can't even confirm the last time kyron was seen - or even if he was at school that day, or when the science fair picture was taken. If he was kidnapped, and they know that (i.e. they have evidence they haven't shared) maybe this is their way to communicate? I know when the search was on for nadia - we had a daily update from the chief, and mostly it was telling us the specifics of the actual search. there are many strange things about this case, IMO. I just want him to be found safe. and i wonder why the search today is concentrated on a 1/2 mile radius of the school.
